We will always find our way back home.
Tarot Club also got a new home last month (we moved to Bar Mordecai) and it's made me think about what it means to put down new roots. My life and career have taken quite a journey away from where I started as a musician. I never thought for a second while practicing my trombone in high school that I would end up using a crystal ball for a living. I also wonder if my mother could have imagined that her daughter would be reading Turkish coffee cups in Canada when she left her village in the mountains of Macedonia.
But here I am.
Some of my earliest memories are of playing music. I remember meeting my first piano when I was 5 years old and instantly becoming obsessed. Somehow, my parents managed to acquire an old upright piano for my 6th birthday. We didn't have a lot of money, so they couldn't afford lessons for me. But that didn't stop me from playing. I would spend hours sitting at the piano exploring all the different sounds it could make. I would compose little pentatonic pieces using all the black keys, or dance up and down the white keys. I would paint sonic pictures of thunderstorms—starting with a few tinkling high notes and far-away rumbles in the low end, gradually building into a dynamic storm and eventually fading away into silence.
Music was my entire life. Until it wasn’t.
I eventually started music lessons, went to an arts elementary school, an arts high school, majored in Jazz Performance and composition at Humber College, and went to film school to learn how to shoot music videos. Music was my entire life… until it wasn't. I had to stop playing music 12 years ago when my mental health made it impossible for me to perform on stage any longer. It was really painful, but I felt like I had no choice. I was able to continue working in the music industry as a photographer and videographer, but always grieved the loss of playing. For a long time, I couldn't even listen to music.
Coffee and tarot reading emerged in my life in my twenties, and that's when I discovered that I come from a long line of Macedonian seers and healers. When I started hosting a psychic call-in radio show in Toronto, my life of performance and spirituality came together. I would spend two hours every week improvising stories and tarot readings live on the air. I realized then that improvising music and channeling readings happened through the same mechanism. Divine and creative inspiration both flowed through the same channel.
During the pandemic, it was impossible to keep the show going and eventually we went off the air. But something new emerged—my intuitive healing practice. My mom told me that my great grandmother fell into a coma for 6 weeks and when she woke up she could heal people because "the angels showed her how to do it while she was sleeping." I learned that in the Balkans there is a tradition of folk healers called Bajalice. The best way to describe their practice is a cross between reiki, witchcraft and shamanic practices. The word bajanje translates roughly into "invoking spirits." Practitioners will call spirits in and let them speak through them in one way or another, either through actions or words.
For me, Spirit speaks in song and sounds.
As I started exploring this practice of energy healing, sounds and songs began to emerge from my mouth. I needed to sing for the healing to work. Soon I could hear that I needed rattles and bells and drums. For me, Spirit speaks in song and sounds.
Now, here I am at the place where I began. Music is once again the center around which my life revolves. I've started learning the cello and improvising strange songs with my friend on the guitar. These songs are making their way into my practice and soon out into the world.
There is only one direction: forward.
My tarot clients often come to me when they are at a crossroads. Their fear is usually about missing what was meant for them by taking a new direction on their path. Or conversely, trying something new means admitting that they were going in the wrong direction before. There is only one direction: forward. I've learned through my own experience that you have to respond to your life in the moment you are living.
Despite owning several crystal balls, I don't always know which way I am supposed to go. However, I have a feeling that no matter which path we take, we will always find our way back home.

Rooting Tarot Spread
I was feeling inspired by the idea of “roots” last month and so I came up with this new Rooting Spread as a way to look at how where we are rooted effects our growth and, ultimately, the fruits of our life and work.
What can this spread be used for?
The spread can be used for a range of queries from personal growth, projects, career path, relationships, etc, and the card positions can signify a variety of different things, depending on the question. I’ll provide some examples below.
Card 1: The Roots
This card can represent the foundation or roots of an issue. It could also represent the earth and nutrients that Roots use for growth and development Depending on the question that could be:
personal or collective history
education
ancestry
desires, dreams, wishes
ideological foundations
the “past” in general terms
inspiration
research material
the start of a relationship (use 1 card to represent each person)
Card 2: The Growth
Think of this card as the stem of a little seedling growing into a thick tree trunk. We can also think of it as an extension of the roots supporting us as we reach for the sky. Grow can be interpreted as
a path or journey we take
what we learn and how we grow personally
developing idea, direction, or theme
a process of transformation / evolution
how a relation dynamic can shift and change
emergent properties of a system or community
Card 3: The Fruit + Branches
The fruiting body of a plant (or a fungi) is the culmination and outward expression of this growth process. It is also the direct result of the work of the roots. Some Fruits could look like:
a completed project
lessons learned
a new sense of self or identity
new career expansion
art pieces
the result of collaboration
family and/or children
I also included optional “branches” because often our growth is not a simple linear process and there may be multiple results from what we planted long ago. I like to think of spreads as very organic shapes that grow as needed. I like to start with a simple 3-card spread, but the deeper we look the more they grow. Feel free to add more cards to the roots and even the growth sections. Maybe the branches have their own Growth phase and Fruits.
Try it out and let me know what grows for you!
