As winter finally melts away, it’s the time to plant new seeds.

Planting New Seeds

I love winter. I know it might be an unpopular opinion, but I love the cold. I love the dark. I love the lack of pressure to go out into the world and DO things. In Toronto this year, we had a very cold and very snowy winter. It was like the winters I remember from my childhood. It was amazing (though I’m sure some people would definitely disagree with me lol).

There were mountains of snow everywhere. The cold never really let up so there was no big midwinter melt and it gave a real feeling of burrowing down and getting cozy for the season. The snow also made it harder to move around, which was definitely a pain. My car was locked in an icy snow bank for a couple of weeks and I had to walk everywhere. However, I feel like all this snow had the same effect as a weighted blanket: forcing us to slow down and get some deeply needed rest. When we did manage to get outside there was a kind of joy and wonder about the whole situation. “Yay! We made it outside! Holy COW! Can you believe this SNOW? This is what a real winter should look like.” Etc. Even the most curmudgeonly of winter haters would had to agree that the neighbourhoods looked beautiful with their houses and trees frosted with snow.

As the winter finally melts away, it’s time to plant new seeds.

Now spring is finally arriving and I don’t have my usual melancholy that comes with winter’s end. I feel truly rested and ready for something fresh and new. But it’s not quite spring yet. The Spring Equinox is not for another week and we are still waiting for all the snow and ice to melt. All of the flowing melt water (and spring rains) gives the feeling like something is being washed away. The Lunar Eclipse we had on March 14th also had a deeply cleansing effect. Did you feel it?

When you read poetry about spring, it usually refers to the blooming blossoms and new life emerging. However, before we get to green grass and flowers we are obliged to go through a much less dainty period of muck. All of that ice and snow was holding on to a lot of crap (especially if you live in the city) and as it melts we have to deal with what is released. That’s kind of how the Lunar Eclipse felt for me. A lot of crap coming up… but then being washed away. It’s an ongoing process. However, the closer we get to spring the lighter everything is starting to feel.

Seems like a good time for a fresh new tarot spread…

Spring Tarot Spread

At the Tarot Club meeting on March 4th, I asked the group what we wanted to work on in our readings. We came up with a lot of great ideas and distilled it down into this 3-Card Spread:

Card 1: What is melting away

This card can be used to represent everything that is being revealed and released. Some examples could be:

• things that need to be released

• things that are ending

• things that are being transformed

2. What is springing forth

After the snow melts, all kinds of new life and energy burst to the surface. This card represents what the energies, ideas, and actions that are emerging.

• What is coming to the surface

• new inspiration and ideas

• new opportunities

• epiphanies

• new encounters

3. What seeds are being planted

This card could represent anything new that we want to grow. Like seeds we plant in a garden, some take longer to germinate than others, so this card could represent what is already growing or something that wants to get started.

• new ideas

• new dreams

• new projects

• new relationships

• new version of our self

This spread would be great to incorporate into any Spring Equinox ritual you might want to create or you can use it at any time of year. You can of course modify this spread to suit your own needs. If you try it out, let me know how it goes!
